Writing Tips: Do I Have to Follow Submission  Guidelines?

A friend of mine was asked to contribute a chapter to a book with a big-name primary author.

She was given a word count limit and other writers guidelines to help with the writing of the chapter.

She became very stressed-out about writing this chapter, and when it came time to turn in her submission, her post was much too long.

What did she do about her failure to follow submission guidelines?

She decided that they had editors who should obviously take care of shortening her submission to meet the guidelines.

WRONG!

Submission Guidelines are not just suggestions!

As a contributor to a book, magazine, e-publication or anything else, you are expected to be able to follow directions. Most places will forgive you for going a word or two over – though some will absolutely NOT.

Guidelines are there for a reason.

It is not the job of the editor, publisher, or compiler to wrangle your work into their guidelines.

Be sure to follow any and all submission guidelines or other instructions to the letter. You will make yourself a much more desirable contributor. And your chances of being asked to participate again are increased.

Writing Tips for Following Writing Submission Guidelines

1. Assume that all directions are in fact carved in stone and irrefutable.

2. If questions arise, address them to your contact well before the submission deadline.

3. Write the deadline into your calendar and set up a specific, dated plan of what you will have done by what date so that you are AHEAD of and not behind schedule.

4. Complete your contribution at least 2-3 days ahead of the deadline, so that you can let your writing sit for a couple of days. This means you will approach your work with a fresh eye.

5. Once your piece is complete, give it to a couple of people who represent the ideal reader or target market. Get their feedback and input.
