It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.–Dale Carnegie Inspirational Quotes & Thoughts on Success: From I Hate My Life to Happy?
“It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.”
– Dale Carnegie Inspirational Quotes on Success
Do you believe it is possible to move quickly—even effortlessly —from feeling “I hate my life!” to feeling happy?
As quick as thought, it could happen.
BUT—
You would need to shift your focus dramatically.
I’m sure you know people like someone I’ll call Sam.
Sam is in a job he doesn’t like. He has a family with a spouse and kids he adores. He works awfully hard for the little money he gets, and he is prone to feeling low.
Sam often plods his way through the day, wishing for escape or a lottery win or something to rescue him. I heard him say to me, “I hate my life.”
Then, as if catching himself saying something naughty (which he kinda was), he amended. “That’s not entirely true. But whenever I think about my going-nowhere job and how much I can’t do for my family, it depresses me.”
I asked Sam, “Would you be willing to try a fun experiment? It’s like a game, really.”
He raised an eyebrow at me. “What is it?”
“It is a simple and fast activity that will flip your switch whenever you start feeling negative.”
“What is it?”
“First tell me, would you do something differently if it were easy and only required a pen and paper?”
“Yes.”
“Great. Are you tired of feeling the way you feel?”
“Very.”
“And are you willing to do something that will take only 5 to 10 minutes a day to shift your thoughts?”
“Sure!”.
“This is something your whole family can do, and I know it will make a huge difference.” After I gave him the instructions, I asked, “Do you commit to do this every day for a week?”
“Yes. I will do it. Promise.”
Sam called me a few days later. His voice sounded so different that I hardly recognized him. “Sam, is that you?” I asked.
“That’s me.” He had strength and optimism in his voice. “It’s a whole new me. What you told me to do changed everything for me. It was almost magical”
I let loose one of my typical “Woo-HOO!” calls and then added, “It worked because you actually followed instructions and took action. The magic is in YOU, Sam.”
So now you want to know what I asked Sam to do, and you’re back at the question that started this post, which was:
Do you believe it is possible to move quickly—even effortlessly—from feeling “I hate my life!” to feeling happy?
The seemingly magical activity I gave Sam is one I share often with mastermind groups and mentoring clients. It’s simply a way to shift your attention.
What makes any tough situation worse is that you keep replaying what you don’t want or what you don’t like inside your head.
I call this Brain TV. And you are in charge of the channels, so to speak, that play inside your head. But what you most often tend to do is let whatever thoughts are going through your head run rampant, like unruly toddlers.
The exercise I gave Sam is something that helps you change channels, switch from negative thoughts to action-oriented thoughts.
I’m not suggesting you put a nice clean whitewash over your life. What I’m suggesting is that you find the good in what is showing up in your life so you can amplify THAT instead of causing the YUCK that you don’t want to expand by dwelling on it.
You can keep a log of all the things you like or enjoy about any person or situation in your life.
