Thought for the Day: What Are Your Unique Gifts?

Thought for the Day: What Are Your Unique Gifts?

The juggler made his fancy tricks seem effortless. He clearly loved what he was doing.

every eye in the room was glued to his performance. And when he dropped one of his batons, nobody minded.

Here is his performance for you to see. In case you do not see the video player below, you may click this link to watch the juggler.

Comments like these could be heard in the lobby after the performance:

  • I wish I was that talented.
  • that was amazing.
  • I could never do something like that
  • He must be specially gifted.

What do you feel when you watch someone perform with ease?

Take a moment to consider.

Was the performance amazing? Yes. Was it beautiful? absolutely.

Does he have a special talent? Yes and no.

Certainly he has both a talent and a passion for performance and a keen desire to juggle. He also has plenty of practice.

His skill came because of countless hours of practice. “This only took 5 years of my life to learn, so feel free to applaud me,” as he himself said.

That effortless juggling routine came to him not because God gave him a special juggling gene or a special super power. Anything can look effortless when the person doing it has long practice.

What about you?

This is your thought for the day:

What Are Your Unique Gifts?

Here’s a story from my own childhood. Perhaps you have a similar memory?

I remember watching my grandmother make gnoci, an Italian pasta made of potatoes. She made it look so incredibly easy. But when I, at about age 6, tried to do exactly what she did, my attempts were clumsy at best.

“I’ve had lots more practice than you,” she told me. “It can be as easy for you one day as it is for me.”

Nana was right. “You’re amazing,” I told her.

“No, I’m not amazing. I’m just cooking for my family.”

To me, she had a special gift with cooking, but she thought nothing of it. She made wonderful meals with such ease and grace.

Anything looks easy when you know what to do so well that you hardly have to think about what to do next. Being boastful about something you do easily is certainly not a way you want to behave.

Acknowledging your ability with humility and gratitude is good.

People have a tendency to downplay their own skill. Chances are you already have a talent that is just as spectacular as the juggling to the people around you.

But perhaps you are unimpressed with your special talent because it is so easy for you. What you do easily may seem so mundane to you.

How valuable is your skill to someone who does not have the ability?

Cooking is pure magic to someone who could burn boiling water. Fixing the toilet is a miracle to the tool impaired.

In other words, you don’t have to be a juggler, a movie star or a world class athlete to be important.

You matter.

You are worthy.

You are valuable.

YOU are a gift to the world, just as you are, with all your faults and foibles, with all your gifts and glory.

What is the Purpose of Legends?

Have you ever asked yourself what’s the purpose of legends?

All my life, I have loved what some would call folklore, mythology, and the spiritual stories of cultures all around the world. When I first was exposed to Greek legends, I felt their truth.

In the trials and tribulations of the individuals in the stories, I could see the same human trials and triumphs of all humanity related in different ways.

Society tends to look upon legends as false, but there is an important purpose of legends, lore and spiritual stories.

When you look at a legend, Bible story, “folk story” or tale from mythology, what is your attitude?

Typically, people who come from the western dominant culture tend to perceive stories from their scriptures to be true and other stories and traditions…as less true or quaint, or even downright false.

So what is truth, then?

Does it matter whether an actual  woman named  Delilah literally cut the hair of a man literally named Sampson? Does it matter whether the great Spirit literally gave the skunk a smell because he failed to respect his own talents? Or is there a deeper meaning?

What if the purpose of legends were to convey universal principles rather than historical facts?

What if there were one story common to all of humanity, no matter where they live or whether they were exposed to the dominant culture of their land?

Watch this video, which gives you an excerpt from the #1 bestselling book  The Peace Seed: Personal and Global Transformation through Storytelling.

Watch the video here.

And here is part of the chapter in straight print..

excerpt of “One Story Unites Us All”

from The Peace Seed: Personal and Global Transformation through Storytelling.

Did you know there is a particular story common to every race, every culture, and every human on the planet? It makes no difference whether you were born in the biggest city, the smallest town, or even in a tribe untouched by the rest of humanity. This story exists everywhere.

Noted mythologist Joseph Campbell dedicated decades studying myths and spiritual traditions of cultures all over the world. Although each culture has its own gods, traditions, and beliefs, he uncovered one story pattern common to all. He called it the “monomyth” or the Hero’s Journey.

The purpose of legends is to guide, inspire and to share truth in non-literal ways so that you continue to grow as a person.

What legends and spiritual stories touch you?

“Don’t Look Back. Leave it All on the Track!”: Inspirational Thoughts on the Power of Affirmations and Courage

“Don’t look back. Leave it all on the track!”

Inspirational Quotes from the movie Racing Stripes.

I watched a movie recently that made me think of you—the success-minded person striving toward fulfilling your dream.

The movie is called Racing Stripes. I want you to rent that movie as soon as you finish reading this post! Because you will have a good time and have a dose of courage at the same time.

racing Stripes is about a zebra who watches horses run and yearns to run on the track with them. Naturally, he is faced with a number of obstacles, including the fact that most of the world thinks he’s weird and different and doesn’t deserve to be among their lofty selves.

Yet Stripes cannot lay aside his dream. Running is in his heart. I know you feel that way about your own passion. You couldn’t set it aside for long even if you tried, right?

Stripes’ coach tells him, “Don’t look back. Leave it all on the track!” It’s not until Stripes is truly tested beyond his limits that he learns exactly what that means.

And everyone who is writing a book, starting a business, or creating any lasting legacy is just like Stripes. You’ll be tested beyond endurance. You’ll face obstacle after obstacle…

What do you do?

What do you do when you’ve trained and trained for something—whether that “something” is running a business or running a race—and you’re there on that Big Day…

You’ve poured your time and energy into this moment. You’ve sacrificed so much to get here to this defining moment.

And somewhere in the middle of that race or that product creation or that launch or whatever your Big Moment is, you get tired.

You get so tired from all the effort, and you don’t know if you can make it. You get shaky and exhausted, and probably your “monkey brain” starts spitting out things like, “You’ll never make it.” “It’s OK to give up. You Tried.” You could wish for some inspirational thoughts to pull you through at that moment, but you’re too tired to muster them up out of nowhere.

Scott Sharp Armstrong, my good friend, colleague and mastermind partner, faced just such a moment running a marathon… Scott is the author of Boston Marathon or Bust and the Best Affirmations Handbook..

It happened around mile 19 of the 26 miles. He didn’t think he had it in him.

He said, “The wheels fell off the bus…” Here’s what happened next…

When you’re tired—when doubts creep in..those are the moments of golden opportunity. You can choose your own outcome.

The difference between giving up and winning your own mental game comes from your decision. You can let your mind talk to you and cause you to give up, OR—

You can decide to be the one who talks to your brain. And if like Scott you’ve practiced ahead of the Big Moment (which you definitely need to) then it will be easier to throw down a stream of inspirational thoughts and positive messages that fortify your courage..

Because it is courage you will need when you’re pushing beyond all imagining and forcing yourself to move through the pain, challenges and other difficulties you face.

You can’t practice overcoming obstacles when you’re facing a mountain. You want to support your courage and fortitude every day in little ways.

Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Write a long list of positive “I am” statements you can use, such as…

  • “I am strong.”
  • “I can do it!”
  • “have the power!”
  • “I overcome all obstacles.”
  • “I am a winner!”

2. You can put these around your house, repeat them to yourself and get used to telling yourself these things every day.

3. Use a voice recorder, your cell phone (which probably has one) or a free program like Audacity to record your own voice saying these things so you get used to hearing yourself in your own voice saying them.

4. Stop watching the news, because bad news is negativity.

Happy Holidays: The Story Lady and The JV Queen Frolic & Play for Your Amusement

Pplayfulness doesn’t have to go away when you are an adult. I LOVE playing!

When I was a kid, my parents gave me an elf doll that had a soft body and braided string for legs. I had the best time making that elf dance.  It looked a little bit like what I’m about to show you…

This is a little holiday cheer for you today! I got together (virtually) with my friend Gina Gaudio Graves, the JV Queen, host of Relationship Marketing 101 Radio,  to bring you a very special dance.

I bet you never knew I could dance like this!

No matter what you celebrate during the winter season, I wish you joyful holidays this year and always.

A HUGE thank-you to Office Max and Jig-Jab for Elf Yorself!

Follow your bliss.
